Electric Planing Mill Fire, Box 83, 1948

Other than “Electric Plane Mill, 1948” (sic), there’s nothing more on the lid of the box. The Electric Planing Mill was situated on 545 S Monroe Street in the Stockton City Directory of 1943. This Mill is no longer mentioned in the 1949 Stockton City Director for obvious reasons. All negatives in this box related…

Wilson-Pastor Wedding, Box 82, Feb 1948

The only readable inscription on this box of negatives is Wilson Wedding, Feb 1, 1948. I was able to figure out, through some genealogical sleuthing, that this was the Everett E Wilson (1922-2012) wedding with Angela Pastor (1926-2018). What made it a bit easier was the 1948 yearbook I bought on Ebay few months back.…

Pandora’s Box 81, 1946-1971

This box of negatives had an expiration date of 1944. Joel was still in Europe at that time, so it’s clear this box didn’t have anything relating to 1944. There are two dates on this box though. June 22, 1963 and July 7, 1971. How did I end up with 1946 ? This image below.…

More Various, Box 80, 1942-1951

The rest of negative box 80 covers familiar and unfamiliar subjects, none of these subjects were photographed at the same time or even in the same year. First images I actually found in this box, was most likely not photographed by Joel, but by his father. This is not a press negative format but an…

Various, Box 80, 1946-1951

This negative box is a catch-all box. Joel wrote on the lid 1948-1951, but I found at least two San Francisco negatives from 1946. Sooo … here we go with the different subjects: “Turner School” is the first subject written on the lid. I have no reference to any school with that name in Stockton,…

The Brown House, Box 79, 1949

The remainder of box 79 negatives plays in “The Brown House”, a women’s clothing store on 1700 Pacific Avenue, per Stockton City Directory of 1949. Joel photographed the store display by night, and there are two young women he photographed in store outfits. In those days, quite a few stores had their own corner where…

Spoonemore Bis, Box 79, 1949

There’s a second photoshoot with Iris Mae Spoonemore tucked away in this box. Iris changes outfits and there’s some more defined make-up. She’s equally more at easy and manages a smile at times. She changed the locket to a strand of pearls. Joel, using different filmstock, starts out at the same Magnolias and then ventures…

Iris Mae Spoonemore, Box 79, 1949

It was hard to read the contents on this box with a total of 46 images, a new record ! Iris Spenemere is all that I could read. A quick search on the UOP digital library showed only one Iris in 1949, and some further genealogical research came up with the full name. Iris Mae…

COP Homecoming, Box 78, 1957

Although this box has an expiration date of Dec 1949, the contents are mostly related to the “Homecoming Parade” of College of Pacific on Saturday, October 19, 1957. We’re jumping 8 years ahead, and yes, there’s a difference in feel noticeable throughout the images. The world is changing. Tommy, the Pacific Tiger, is prominently featured…

Christmas, Box 77, Dec 1948

After photographing all these products for K.P.F. Electric, it is time for a Christmas meal. August Julius Pahl is inviting and doing the honors. The year prior we’ve seen Christmas dinner at his place also (1947) with Jack Pahl and Genevieve Brooks and the children. The rest of the images are all about unwrapping presents…
