Box 17 contains 12 negatives. There are few names on the cover of this box, there’s just no certain way to attach a name to a face as that relationship is lost to non-family members.
Yes, Joel is photographing a few Pahl family members. Some of the faces we’ve seen before on his 22nd and 27th birthday party. Other faces are new, but since I’ve researched the genealogy of Joel, I know that Werne and Bernice, two names on the cover of the box, are a nephew and his wife.
Other names on the box are Jane and Nicki
First family and friends images are at the beach.

The above image is in front of Casa Del Mar at Seacliff Beach.

Two more images of Werne and Bernice below.

Joel’s uncles can be found in few other images at a yet unidentified location. Some crooked structure remnant where they defy a leaning reality.

The remainder of the images are poolside at COP, these images could very well be part of the previous pool images shown in yesterday’s blog post.

And yes, for the last portrait, Joel stepped into the water with his camera. The only secure way to nail this shot in this perspective from this distance.
Some of these shots are “Hollywood magazine” inspired, we’ll see more evidence of this as Joel’s shooting style evolves.
Two more boxes in this 1946 series to look at.
Cheers !

The slanted structures are at the “Mystery Spot” near Santa Cruz.
