Eano Canepa, Box 28, 1947

This box simply says Eano Canepa Graduation 1947 and Sum (sic) Dinner 1947

A total of 16 negatives. Ten graduation related and 6 images of friends at dinner.

According to Naranjado 1947, Eano graduated in June 1947. This anchors the date on the images.

Why would Joel photograph Eano’s graduation ? They were close friends during their lifetimes. Both got their Associate Arts Degree, together with 265 other JC Students, from Stockton Junior College on June 13, 1942 in Pacific’s Outdoor Theater at 7:30pm. (Pacific Weekly, June 5, 1942) Dr. Dewey Powell was the Commencement Speaker that day.

Monday, June 16, 1947 is not only graduation day for 270 COP graduates, it’s also the official inauguration of Robert E. Burns as President of COP. The Pacific Weekly of June 6, 1947 has the full schedule on page 71.

Joel is using on-camera flash for all these images. the flash would have been attached at the right hand side of the camera.

  1. Just a thought… Joel was not an adventurous eater. So it looks like he might have also been curious about eating Chinese food with “sticks”!
