Six negatives left over in 120 roll film format. The label on the envelope reads “COP Football, Sept 2, 1959”
This confirms that Joel was shooting 120/220 format as early as 1959. I’ve seen a few other sample from that vintage float by. Joel still shoots the 3×4″ Press Format and the 4×5″ Large Format, but he adds another tool to his box … 120/220 roll film.
It’s not clear which camera Joel used between 1959 and 1964. The Koni-Omega was only released in 1964, so Joel used a different camera prior to this.
All negatives were properly exposed and developed. Great resolution and contrast. A step up from his other gear.
All six shots is most likely photographed on practice or warm-up. There are no spectators in the bleachers. And a photographer is seen with a Press format camera taking photographs of the team in action. Joel is shooting from the sidelines.
Checking the Holt-Atherton Digital Archives confirms there were no planned football matches in September 1959.

I don’t have a roster of this group, but Dick Bass might still be with COP. Experts, feel free to weigh in !

We stepped back a little in time, grounding ourselves for the next series of period images to scan and share.
Cheers !
