This basketball game was found in one of the 4×5 negative sleeves from the Jessica Fong Collection of Dardis negatives.
The date on the sleeve is Dec, 1956. Since the Chico State basketball game is discussed in the December 7, 1956 Pacific Weekly, all seems to fit. Further research showed this game was played on Saturday December 1, 1956, and COP won although Chico State took the lead in the first half.
The only problem is that Joel didn’t have a 4×5″ format camera yet. Looking closely at the negatives, one can observe that these 4×5 format negatives were made on an enlarger from smaller press format negatives.
So Joel cropped and cleaned up his press negatives to have “perfect” 4×5 negatives. Most likely this was part of an photography exercise, or Joel was learning a new technique.
I didn’t find the original negatives yet, they may no longer exist. But it is clear that all the negatives below look homogenous. Properly cropped, properly lit and showing action in the game.
Although Joel does no longer have professional photography aspirations, he makes a living teaching in Lodi, Joel does continue his learning curve and wants to deliver good material to print from. (All these negatives were contact printed.)
We’ll observe this continuing trend in future work.
