Both box 96 and 97 had a few negative frames of COP football embedded. Neither one of the boxes had any reference to a game, but few of the sleeves from the Jessica Fong collection had various notes about football games, without any football game content.
In short, I’m not sure which game this is about, or even when it was played. A good estimate is 1955 or 1956 as from 1957 on, Joel is slowly switching to 4×5 inch negative format. It is clear though that the negatives found are all from the same game location in boxes photographed in 1955 or 1956.
It’s possible we find references in the future to the game, or there’s an image left or right in a College of Pacific yearbook. Time will tell. But the stadium is definitely not at COP Stockton.
There’s sufficient reason to post these images. It tells us that Joel is back into photographing sports events for COP on location rather than just home.
At the same time, it gives us the confirmation that Joel is not photographing that much. He’s either more selective or he doesn’t have the time to go all-out. He does have a job as a teacher after 1953.
There are still a few yellow Kodak press format boxes to go through before switching to mostly larger 4×5″ negatives. Times are changing.
