This 4×5″ negative sleeve from the Jessica Fong Collection of Dardis negatives plays at Lake Tahoe. The date is August 12, 1966.
Joel is visiting or passing through there with friends. Joel is shooting 4×5 film, both standard B&W and few sheets of infrared.

Joel is using a timer to trip the shutter of his camera. It appears that in the second shot he was questioning if that timer would ever go off … hahaha … we’ve all done this !

When using a red filter of the proper wavelength with infrared film, blues turn dark to almost black. This can clearly be seen in the above infrared image. Water and skies are very dark while everything green takes on a lighter to almost white tone.
What’s also clear is that infrared film cuts through the haze. The mountains in the IR image are better defined than in the standard B&W image.

And we get to see the magic again of the infrared film in the next image below.

Next shot is clearly on infrared film, but Joel may have switched to a different red or even orange filter. He also used a longer focal length lens for a different crop and perspective.

Time for some “we were there” snapshots.

Next few images are at water edge.

And the self timer is giving Joel some challenge during that shoot ! He saw the irony and kept the shot. Joel didn’t throw much away.

From snapshots to some very print worthy negatives, Joel brought it all back from his trip.
Cheers !
