Soap Box Derby, Box 103, 1959

This is the second Stockton Soap Box Derby I find in Joel’s negatives. He was covering the 4th Soap Box Derby in Stockton on Saturday, July 12, 1959.

All images are photographed in press format, so Joel is most likely using his trusty Graflex RB Super D in this case.

I’ve scanned attached the newspaper clippings Joel inserted in the box of negatives, one or more of his images were published in the Stockton Record at the time.

The newspaper clippings are a great resource for details on the race, but there are also the names of the participants.

Most of the 17 images are car finishes and a few of the winner, Dennis Petersen, the first time Derby Queen Cathy Samuelson, and Dennis’ parents and crew members.

And now for the newspaper clippings, a total of three, one is definitely cropped out of a Joel Dardis photograph.

Doesn’t look like Joel received this negative back from The Record.
