All the King’s Men, Box 72, Dec 10, 1948

Negative Box 72 was found with multiple subjects, and upon closer examination, contained images shot during the filming of “All the King’s Men” at the COP Morris Chapel. Shooting of the movie was from Dec 1948 to Feb 1949. The date Joel left behind on the box was Dec 10, 1948.

It’s no secret that Stockton was often called “the Hollywood in the North”, as many movies were shot in and around the city because of its character.

All the King’s Men is a 1949 American film noir written, produced, and directed by Robert Rossen. It is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning 1946 Robert Penn Warren novel of the same name. The film stars Broderick Crawford (Willie Stark), John Ireland (Jack Burden), Mercedes McCambridge (Sadie Burke), and Joanne Dru (Anne Stanton). The plot focuses on the rise and fall of the ambitious and ruthless politician Willie Stark in the American South.

The film won three Academy Awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture, the award for Best Actor, which went to Broderick Crawford, and the award for Best Supporting Actress, won by Mercedes McCambridge.

Joel must have quickly snuck in to take the above shot, as he was in camera view.

Quite a few Stocktonians, and Suisun folks, got extra roles, some with spoken lines, during the filming of the movie. This was somewhat of a novelty, or even unheard of, at the time for Hollywood. The old courthouse (#2) was featured prominently during this movie.

Next few images were not published in Naranjado 1949 yearbook, but are equally important as they capture some of the key players in this movie.

There are all movie related shots in this box. The last two are quite interesting, not the promotional image one would get from Columbia Pictures.

Next two images are more College of Pacific Club images, Joel made sure to get the shot by doubling up. The shown image below was published in Naranjado 1949.

The next section are all basketball images from few different matches. All images were printed, but I couldn’t find any in the COP yearbook from 1949.

The last few images are from boats and shed on one of Stockton’s many waters. It’s clearly winter, no other indications of where this could have been or if there’s an association with “All the King’s Men” movie.

Joel was clearly in a boat then this was photographed.

These images were important to Joel, he doubled up on shots and made sure he got the dog in the image in the last photograph.
